Vending Machine

It was mid-afternoon, and I needed an energy boost to finish grading papers, so I went downstairs to the school’s nearest vending machine.

I swiped my credit card and then punched in the code.  D1.  Peanut M&M’s.

The machine started buzzing and the metal coil started turning just like it was supposed to.

But then it paused.

The package just hung there instead of dropping.

Shit, I thought, this is one of those times when I get screwed.

Just then the machine started buzzing again and the metal coil started turning just like it was supposed to.  The M&M’s fell and hit the bottom with a thud.  But the coil didn’t stop turning.  It kept going until a second package of M&M’s fell and hit the bottom with a thud too.

I looked side-to-side, shrugged, and then reached in and grabbed them both.

It was one of those times when I didn’t get screwed at all.
